This does not mean that the Kacey 18 Movies world is a world where the (always hypothetical) laws of nature are suspended. It is rather a world where the supposed "real essences" are seen as infused with meanings: as when we immediately understand a smile not as flesh and bones, but "as spirit, freely revealed. The human soul is not the ghost in the machine. It is what we are in direct contact with when we see a human face. The human face is a mystery: it can strike us with wonder. But it is not a mystery to be explained in the way a problem is to be explained". It is an unmysterious sense that it is accessible to everybody on condition that certain ways of seeing and reacting are preserved and participated in. My contention is that a discussion of the notion of freedom today can't escape a confrontation with the changes brought about in the lifeworld by the predominance of the scientific point of view and the technological- instrumentalist attitude usually associated with it. There is not only the threat of a rejection of the notion of freedom due to scientistic and reductionist illusions. There is not only the threat of a quasi-physicalist philosophical understanding of the notion of freedom mentioned at the beginning. |
