People who organize their lives in function of these machines of the first kind are not considered free, but rather slaves, slaves of their need for continual gratification or satisfaction. They are considered unfree, even though they can do what they want, and even though they seem to be able to want what they want. Although they may claim to be happy, their happiness is "uninteresting". It is uninteresting for two reasons: it is divorced from important forms of life, and it is a solipsistic happiness divorced from the recognition of others.
